Nestled in the middle of downtown
New Glarus's
Second Street block,
the Glarner
Stube is a Southern Wisconsin institution.
Above the awning is a mural of
Glarus, Switzerland, whose residents
settled in Green County over 150 years
ago.
The front of the restaurant is full of
color and life during the warmer
months of the year. Owner Debbie
Anderegg personally oversees
the selection of the flowers and plants
and she works hard to maintain their
inviting presence throughout spring, summer and fall. (She's also been known to help out her gardening-impared friends with their own flower boxes.)
It might make more sense that the front entrance of the "Stube" be a revolving door; there are so many people coming and going! In fact, in 2008, owners Debbie and Gary Westby repeated broke their own people-served records. It's a busy place, and well worth the wait.
This is "Gary's Chair," but all are welcome to lounge in it. There's a nice flat-pannel television mounted in the corner so people can watch their favorite teams in action. (Although if Gary's got the remote, you'd better be ready to watch some golf.) This is a great place to sit and watch the locals and tourists both inside and outside the restaurant.
The copper-top bar is a fairly new addition to the Glarner Stube's decor. Cool to the touch, the bartop is beginning to weather nicely and take on an "antique" look. In fact, it's starting to match the copper hood (right), which was fashioned out of an old cheese-making vat.
The Glarner Stube is proud to have eight New Glarus Brewery beers on tap - more than any other tavern in the country! Some of the beer changes out seasonally, but the fantastically popular brews like Spotted Cow, Fat Squirrel and Organic Revolution are flowing year-round. And if you're a fan of the seasonal beer Edel Pils, try a "Naked Squirrel," invented at the "Stube."
If you have to wait for a table, why not try one of the Stube's delicious appetizers? During the winter months Gary serves up this incredible special; a variety of house cured meats. The flavors and selection will change based on availability and Gary's imagination. The meats are cured using age-old traditional European methods combined with a bit of New Glarus ingenuity.
This is Steve. Steve is unique. Steve is the world-famous "Bottellier." That means Steve skillfully swacks liquor and beer bottles with spoons to the beat of '70s disco anthems - most often Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell." Yes, this is what Steve does. He has other tricks, too: air-violinist, host-jumper and dancing machine just to name a few. Did I mention that Steve is also a bartender?
And if Steve isn't enough to keep you entertained, meet "Buck." Many people ignore poor Buck, believing that he is nothing more than a hunting trophy. They couldn't be any more wrong. Buck sings, tells jokes, shakes his head from side to side and up and down and yodels! (We hear he's also gunning for Steve's job.) Buck even dresses up occasionally, donning braids for "Heidi Fest," sporting his favorite teams' jerseys on game day and spooking it up for Halloween.
